Multi Vehicle Collision Closes Highway 401 – Four Confirmed Deceased and Two Taken To Hospital With Serious Injury

(FRONTENAC, ON.) – On May 11, 2017, officers from Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Frontenac, Leeds County and Napanee detachments, assisted by the Frontenac Fire Department and OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI), attended the scene of a multi vehicle collision at 1:25 a.m.

The collision, which occurred on Highway 401 westbound, west of the exit for Joyceville Road, involved seven vehicles which included four tractor trailer units, a commercial truck and two passenger vehicles, one of which became fully engulfed with fire.

As a result of this collision, two persons have been transported to hospital with serious injuries and the four occupants of the fully engulfed vehicle have been confirmed deceased. The deceased will not be identified pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation is still in its early stages and further updates will only be provided as confirmed and accurate information becomes available.

Highway 401 westbound will remain closed at Joyceville Road, for an undetermined amount of time to allow for the investigation. Detours are currently in place.
