Town of Gananoque Former Fire Chief Gerald Bennett Charged with Fraud
The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands learned today that former Town of Gananoque Fire Chief, Gerald Bennet, has been charged with fraud by the OPP.
The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands had contracted with the Town of Gananoque for a shared Fire Chief position until September 2016.
The two-year OPP investigation has resulted in the following charges: 15 counts of fraud, six counts of uttering a forged document, three counts of theft, and breach of trust.
“This was a difficult situation that our staff and fire service personnel persevered through”, commented Mayor Smith-Gatcke. “We are not in a position to comment on the OPP investigation or it’s findings”, the Mayor concluded.
Greg Borduas, CAO wants to express his confidence in the leadership of the Leeds 1000 Islands Fire Service. “Under the command of Fire Chief Rick Lawson and our roster of dedicated volunteer firefighters, our department is functioning at full capacity and the safety and care of our residents is top priority,” Borduas noted.
