Provincial police have charged a man with manslaughter in the March 2019 death of an inmate at the Quinte Detention Centre.
Paramedics were called to the Napanee, Ont., jail on March 18 after 31-year-old Hendrik Peter Ryskamp of Kingston, Ont., was found unresponsive.
Ryskamp was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Wednesday, OPP said they had charged 41-year-old Barry Samuel Kerlovich of Napanee with manslaughter, as well as possessing and trafficking an opioid other than heroin.
The month before Ryskamp’s death, Kerlovich had also been charged with drug possession and trafficking offences.
The Quinte Detention Centre holds inmates serving sentences up to two years less a day, or people on remand waiting for their cases to go to trial.
OPP would not reveal Kerlovich’s status at the time of his arrest. He was scheduled to appear in Napanee court on the new charges Wednesday.
